Van Fanel
A Draconian, one of the mystical winged people of Gaea, he is the son of the King of Fanelia and the pilot of the legendary Ispano Guymelef Escaflowne.
Where is he from?
The 1996 anime television series Visions of Escaflowne is very much told from the perspective of it's teenage female protagonist Hitomi, and that means that Van's main job is to be engaging to her and the audience. It's always fun when a hero is designed with the female gaze in mind, but even better when they manage to make him engaging in his own right, and Van manages to strike a particular balance that is rare. In an already cool project (I didn't grow up with anime, but I always loved Escaflowne), Van just makes the whole thing that much better. He was originally voiced in the Japanese dub by Tomokazu Seki, and then by two different actors for the english dubs; KIrby Morrow for Bandai and Aaron Disuke for Funimation.
