Where is he from?
The Count of Monte Cristo is a beloved standard of adventure stories, and has been interpreted on stage and screen for a very long time.
James O'Neil, the father of playwright Eugene O'Neil, performed the role of Edmond Dantès on stage over 6000 times. It actually became a burden to him, something he did because he couldn't afford NOT to do it, and it is often speculated that it was at the detriment to his career as it kept him from other pursuits in what would have been one of the greatest stage careers of a generation.
Robert Donat was a great romantic leading man in London when he made his only appearance in a Hollywood movie, 1934's The Count of Monte Cristo
Jean Marais starred in the 1954 French film, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo.
Michael Dolenz Sr starred in the 1956 TV series The Count of Monte Cristo.
British film legend Richard Chamberlain starred in the 1975 television movie The Count of Monte Cristo, an attempt at an accurate adaptation of the novel.
The 2002 film adaptation starred Jim Caviezel.
The 2002 movie loosely influenced a stage musical, which opened in St. Gallen with Thomas Borchert as Edmond.
The musical has also been performed in the states, where Edmond was played by Matt Farcher.
The story of the Count of Monte Cristo lends itself very well to serialized drama, as it's been the source material for several soap-opera style television programs. My personal favorite is Montecristo, a 2006 Argentinian soap opera starring Pablo Echarri.... I don't speak Spanish, but I still watched the crap out of this...
...it's also been sighted as source material for the 2011 ABC series Revenge, which was set in the modern day, and has recast Edmond as Emily Thorn, who is played by Captain America's girlfriend Emily VanCamp.
Of course, if we couldn't tell just by the artwork, Pika herself has specified that her Edmond is Gérard Depardieu, from the 1998 miniseries The Count of Monte Cristo.
