Jessica Jones
A private investigator who just happens to have super powers.
Where is she from?
Jessica Jones debuted in the Marvel comic Alias, a creation of Brian Michael Bendis when he was still incredibly innovative. She was a private investigator in a world populated by superheroes. Over the course of the comic we learn about her own powers, her history as an attempted superhero, and her deep history of abuse (a male writer defined his female heroine through a history of abuse? I'm shocked! SHOCKED!) She's gone on to carve a niche for herself in the larger Marvel universe, even occasionally serving on the Avengers.
Meanwhile, when Netflix started producing MCU-based series featuring street-level Marvel characters, one of the best and most innovative was Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter. Jessica is such a fantastic character here, full of angsty bitterness and snark and feminist punching power. The show leaned hardcore into the abuse in the character's backstory, but managed to do it in a way that kept the story solidly about her and her relationship to her own trauma. It is so watchable it's insane.
