Raoul De Chagny Appearances
The interesting thing about Raoul is that his characterization in any given version of Phantom of the Opera is always going to run as an inverse of how sympathetic that stories depiction of the Phantom is meant to be. The more monsterous the Phantom, the more sympathetic Raoul will be, and visa versa. He's not actually the main character of the story so there aren't as many interesting takes on Raoul as there is for Christine & Erik, but there ae still a few that are worth noticing.
The earliest actor to play the character was Norman Kerry in the original 1925 silent film. This was a horror movie, and Lon Chaney Sr.'s Phantom was clearly the monster, so Raoul was a very tender character... with an excellent mustache.
Edward de Souza played a more arrogant version of the character In the 1962 movie, but we still rooted for him, as the Phantom depicted here was pretty monstrous. This Christine really got a bum deal..
The 1983 movie featured a decidedly nondescript version of the character, barely a roadbump in Christine & Erik's relationship. He's noteworthy, however, because he was played by legendary film actor Michael York.
While there have, been thousands of actors to play Raoul in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, the role was pretty much established by the performance by Steve Barton in the original 1988 cast.
The 1990 tv miniseries really wanted to play up the relationship between Christine & the Phantom, so Adam Storke's character was basically a heel. Also, he was named Phillip instead of Raoul, using the name of Raoul's brother from the original book. He certainly looked the part, but it's hard to look at him and not see Julia Robert's love interest from Mystic Pizza.
If we're naming unique Raouls, then we absolutely have to mention Andrea di Stephano in the 1998 Dario Argento horror film. Like the rest of the movie, he's completely out there, but at least he has beautiful, beautiful hair.
Of course, there is also 2004 Joel Schumacher film, that portrayed a truly and immediately likable Raoul, a young handsome swashbuckler that actually buckles some swash, and is played by future Hollywood leading-man, Patrick Wilson. Much of the GND universe is populated by references to the movie, and obviously our Christine thinks her Raoul is a guy worth being with... so I think this is our guy.
