Pugsley Addams Appearances
After the original comics, Pugsley and the Addams family have been adapted a number of times. While live-action versions of the character tend to all relate back to the classic 1964 telivison series, animated ones often draw more from the classic comic.
Pugsley was played in the original 1`964 TV series (and the 1977 reunion film Halloween with the New Addams Family) by Ken Weatherwax, who basically lost interest in acting after he was essentially typecast as Pugsley, and became a grip & set builder.
While the 1973 animated series certainly drew a lot of inspiration from the beloved live-action TV series, it's visual style skewed much closer to the comic. Pugsley was voiced, belive it or not, by an 11-year-old future 2-time Oscar winner named Jodie Foster.
The 1992 animated series was a direct adaptation to the recent Barry Sonnenfeld film, but again skewed closer to the original comic. Pugsley was voiced by Jeannie Elias.
The 1998 direct-to-video Addams Family film was another attempt to capitalize on the feature films (which made the very wise decision to cast Tim Curry as Gomez). Here Pugsley is played by Jerry Messing, who would grow up into the fedora guy meme.
The short-lived 1998 TV series was a spin-off of the direct-to-video movie recast almost everyone. Pugsley was played by Brody Smith, who doesn't have a lot of other credits that I can find,
In 2010, The Addams Family opened on Broadway. the show would go on to a very successful national tour as well as having productions spring up all over the world. The part of Pugsley was originated by Adam Riegler, who went on to become a 'Kids Night on Broadway' national ambassador.
In 2019 a new CG animated film adaptation of the Addams Family was released, and once again the animated take on the characters veers much closer to the original comic. Pugsley here is voiced by hugely popular teen actor Fin Wolfhard.
I'm sure you noticed a massive spike in the popularity of the Addams family in the 90's, and that is of course all due to the Barry Sonnenfeld film, which was a massive blockbuster and is actually still just a fantastic watch. This is the movie that GND is referencing, which means that the Pugsley attending college with Sarah & Christine, and doing bloody renditions of Titus Andronicus, is Jimmy Workman, the template for practically all takes on the character to follow (and big brother to Modern Family star Ariel Winter, as it turns out.)
