Clarice Starling
A student at the FBI Academy that hopes to join the Behavioral Science Unit and catch serial killers.
Where is she from?
Clarice is the main protagonist Thomas Harris's 1988 novel the Silence of the Lambs, the follow-up to 1981's Red Dragon. As Red Dragon had been made into the 1986 film Manhunter, the film adaptation of Silence of the Lambs was technically a sequel, but went on to completely reinvent the series, thanks largely to the outstanding performances of it's leads.
The 1999 novel Hannibal was written after the massive success of the 1991 film adaptation of Silence of the Lambs. The book is STAGGERINGLY good, but the 2001 Ridley Scott film adaptation falls somewhat short. Clarice is played here by Julianne Moore, who despite the otherwise mediocre film is absolutely stellar.
But of course, the quintessential Clarice is Jodie Foster's Oscar-winning performance in Johnathan Demme's 1991 film Silence of the Lambs. This is routinely considered to be one of the greatest horror-thrillers movies of all time, and the ONLY horror movie to ever win the Oscar for best picture. Clarice was actually named the sixth greatest protagonist in film history by the American Film Institute, which makes her the highest ranked heroine.
