Lord Asriel
An one-time powerful member of the British Aristocracy that has dedicated himself to his work in "experimental theology".
Where is he from?
Lord Asriel is a character from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials books. A series that I very much enjoyed but never finished. It's been adapted into live action twice, the most recently as a 2019 HBO miniseries that seems to be slightly higher quality, where Asriel is played by James Mcavoy...
But the comics is obviously referencing the 2007 feature film The Golden Compass, an adaptation of the first book in the series that was clearly designed to capitalize on the Harry Potter fandom even though the two book series have very little in common besides having a kid as the protagonist. This movie is decent, not quite as good as the miniseries, but it definitely scores points for casting Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel. While Mcavoy absolutely does a great job creating a powerful and intimidating character, you just can't match the way Craig doess so almost effortlessly.
Comic Appearances
GND 315 - Javert brings Alexander Hamilton to Lord Asriel (going past Nux, Finn & Rey) for his outbursts against Jupiter in Professor Telcontar's class. Professor Dennis barges in. Asriel briefly shifts into another persona.
