Mrs. Lovett
A widowed pie-shop owner and maker of 'the worst pies in london' who goes into business with her upstairs tennant. Soon business is booming, thanks to her business partner's unique method for aquiring baking supplies..
Where is she from?
Mrs. Lovett is a character that is often depicted as the accomplice of the penny dreadful character Sweeney Todd., but she wasn't always a part of the story. There is some speculation that she was in fact an entirely seperate penny dreadful character, and that the two characters were combined into a single story at some point. Earlier films might include her, but the could just as easily leave her out.
Her place in the story was made permanent in Sondheim's 1979 broadway musical Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The character was played by the incomparable Angela Lansbury, who won a tony for the role. Her performance was absolutely incredible, and any takes on Mrs. Lovett have been pale imitations ever sense.
The fact then that Helena Bonham Carter, when she appeared in the 2007 Tim Burton movie, managed to produce a character that was it's own thing and not just an imitation of Angela Lansbury's legendary performance is actually quite a feat in and of itself. She's the GND Mrs Lovett.
