Page 343 - "Wiiiiiiiiide Open"
GND 343 - Jareth informs Sarah how dangerous it is to leave a window open beckoning for magical cuddling, leaving him to make a deal with Dresden. With Christine's crisis past, they agree to go on their Paris date.
Pika's text:
alt title: lyrics to that indie teenage fave "Come To My Window" by Melissa Etheridge, as still featuring on some of my antique playlists.....
(or à la Frozen, "Love is an Open [Window]"...? )
Does it count as pillow talk when the pillow is used for muffling screams of aggravation and smacking grinning perverts in the face? Inquiring minds want to know.
And whodda thunk, not so long ago, we’d be at a point in GND where a page starts with Sarah waking up to an unexpected Goblin King in her bed, but he doesn’t get violently ejected until the last panel?
Segue to this scene, of course, is hungover grumpy Christine bursting it to complain about being woken up by the screeching and loud thumps… (“oh, oh I SEE, so it’s drunken snuggles for me and not for thee, I SEE HOW IT IS, SARAH - !”)
(and at some point Jareth twigging to “Wait, *Erik* said…? Last night? ...” And probably getting shirty about the girls having met Lucifer.)
And a few extra notes for clarity. Yes, Jareth is absolutely distracted by Sarah almost falling out of her half-strapless dress here. Yes, she drunkenly fell asleep before managing to get undressed for bed, and snuggling his owl-cloak she has kept; and yes at some point he tenderly covered her up, in between supernatural tussles outdoors. Those are kinda a tie-in to this being kiiiinda Halloween-period still, extra beasties about - although clearly by GND timeline and window-opening action it is still summery. TIMEYWIMEYFUDGE.
Also timey-wimey how-many-years-later-even?! shoutout to when HeroesDaughter was drawing another wee spin-off to the Building-verse and played with Prince Dracula his sinister self being very charming to Sarah and getting Jareth’s hackles up. >
And Sarah still has a lot of magical bullshit to deal with. Unfortunately for her, in that slightly wanton inebriated state last night, the craving for drunken snuggling - a motivation not to be underestimated, clearly! - and the window-opening was all but an unspoken Wish and those we all well know are dangerous.
Unfortunately also, for Sarah’s safety and Jareth’s peace of mind, there is a whole thing going on here. It is definitely backwards and sexist! But the Building-’verse is rife with narrativium, and Sarah …. is a Princess. It's right there in her name! She checks most of the boxes to fit a certain kind of storyline, and therefore becomes a high-value and extremely attractive target to characters and creatures of an abducting/seducing/corrupting type. We all know she’d rather be the Champion doing the fighting! And sure, she has a lot of genre-savvy and a modern education and pluck and a Fail-field working in her favour. But alas, as her character arc here is taking her out of a PG state of being, and until/unless she comes fully into her own powers… not to be too hinky about it but she is, ah, unicorn-bait, and looking like a snack.
(In other terms, as I’ve said sometimes, you can basically equate Sarah’s Certain Powers to the Mary-Sue Classic bundle.) (Christine meanwhile has worked off some of that sheer catnip-to-villains aura by virtue of her relationship with Raoul, but some always do prefer blondes, and she is hacked/primed to be super-susceptible to mind-control moves. WHOOPS.)
Why yes, extra complications to the Glittery Issues ship!
Voilà, I hope you enjoy chewing on all that and this page. A belated happy Halloween and - best wishes and hugs to all as we plunge into whatever 2020 throws at us next.
